Michael (1980-1996)

I thought I saw you driving on the road today,

but it wasn’t you at all.

I could have sworn I heard your voice today,

in the crowded mall.

Was that your shadow I saw today

and did I really hear your footsteps in the hall?

So many illusions I had today,

and why do you never call?

Sadly, I can answer these questions today,

though I wish they’d never been asked at all.

I noticed it was nearing the end of summer today,

when I looked at the calendar upon the wall.

And as I gaze at the stars tonight,

I realize you’ll have been gone a year, come Fall.
